Saturday fun for all the family

10/12/2014

Reindeer, an array of festive fare and the return of the elves will continue Hull's countdown to Christmas in the heart of the city centre.

The centrepiece of the attractions on Saturday 13th December will be a special Christmas market of 30 stalls extending from King Edward Street into Queen Victoria Square. Live reindeer will be housed in a pen near the Christmas tree while a choir performs nearby. Meanwhile, the elves - who last formed part of the city centre celebrations in 2011 - invite people to join them for a tea party nearby. The market and activities will start at 10am and continue until 5pm, with the reindeer leaving at 3pm as they require plenty of rest at this time of year.

Kathryn Shillito, HullBID City Centre Manager, said the attractions are part of a programme of activities including the Princes Quay Santa's Parade and the recent Victorian Christmas event, aimed at pulling crowds into the city centre: "The Victorian Christmas was a great success and the Elves Market is going to be great fun. Plus on Saturday 20th December Holy Trinity Church will stage their hugely popular Live Nativity, which meanders and pops up iaround the city's shopping centres and culminates at the church itself."

The Hull Daily Mail sourced the reindeer as part of their support for the event and the market has been organised by Julie Buffey, who runs Trinity Open Market. The elves have been resting for the last few years but return by popular demand.

"In the past we have had an elf trail around city centre shops and celebrated National Elf Day," said Kathryn. "This year the elves will have a Christmas tea party, with visitors to the event able to join in the fun and have their photograph taken. It promises to be a great family event that will attract crowds into the city centre and encourage people to support our local businesses."

Julie Buffey said the market will feature some of the traders from the regular Trinity Open Market and offer festive goods and produce from the wider region: "There will be an artisan feel to some of the stalls and people will be able to pick up Christmas gifts and food and drink from stallholders. These will include local traders, some of them city centre businesses who are going to become market traders for the day.

For the Live Nativity on 20th December, Trinity Open Market will be going indoors and operating inside Holy Trinity Church. At each of these events, people will also be directed to the other festive attractions in the city centre shops, such as Santa's Ice Palace in Princes Quay."
So pop Saturday 13th and Saturday 20th in your diary and get down to the city centre for a host of festive fun.
